A Paper Sizes Chart
Based on chart from Office 365 Stationery
The chart to the right shows the relationships and relative sizes of the ISO 216 A paper sizes, showing how a single sheet of all the smaller sizes will fit onto an A0 sheet. The chart also gives the sizes of North American letter and legal paper for comparison.
ISO 216 specifies A paper sizes as follows:
A0 has an area of 1 square metre.
The ration of the longer side to the shorter side is 1.4142:1 (sq root 2:1)
A(n) is A(n-1) divided into two parallel to the shorter edge.
All sizes are rounded to the nearest millimetre as the root 2 aspect ratio doesn't give whole numbers.
The following formal tolerances are specified by ISO 216 for general production environments.
±1.5 mm (±0.06 in) for sizes up to 150 mm (5.9 in)
±2 mm (±0.08 in) for sizes between 150 and 600 mm (5.9 to 23.6 in)
±3 mm (±0.12 in) for sizes above 600 mm (23.6 in)
4A0 & 2A0 Oversize Formats
For larger sizes of paper 4A0 and 2AO are often used, these sizes are not formally defined by ISO 216 but came from the German DIN 476 which predates ISO 216.
RA & SRA Uncut Formats
Related to ISO 216 is ISO 217 Paper - Untrimmed Sizes which covers untrimmed paper for commercial printing where bleed of the print is a standard part of the process. RA and SRA are defined at 105% and 115% of the A paper sizes.
